Social Climbers?

March 25th, 2009 by Aaron

The gloves are off, Winnipeg.

Your enthusiastic Winnipeg O’ My Heart blogging team is preparing to attend its first wedding social! The event takes place this Friday night, March 27th 2009, at an undisclosable location in Winnipeg.

In the short days leading up to the event, the team anticipates a chorus of emotions ranging from excitement to amusement and, finally, elation. Do you have an tips for the unwitting social virgins? Are there any wedding social “must” and “musn’t” dos that the team should know about before committing a ‘social’ faux pas? (For example, is it rude to lick the mustard knife? Or to ask if anyone in the room is related to Nia Vardalos?) Tonight the team creates custom wedding social t-shirts that will identify them as newcomers to this Manitoba tradition.

Please keep yourself updated by following twitter (#mbsocial) and, of course, your new favourite Winnipeg blog!

    Long-time reader, first-time commenter…

I just thought you should know about a little thing called “Social Time”. Social Time is the acceptable time at which you should arrive at a social. Now, although there can be slight variations (due to your relationship with the organizers of the social, the weather outside, how far you are travelling to get to the social, etc.), the acceptable arrival time is a direct function of your age, or in mathematical terms: arrival_time = f (age). The relationship between the two can be observed on this graph:

As you can see, at a younger age (when you go to socials with your parents), you arrive at a social at or near the start time (usually 8:00pm), but as you get older (and thus, cooler), your arrival time will be delayed (until as late as 10:00pm when you are in your prime cool-years). However, as you continue aging (and become a parent who brings their kids to socials), your arrival time returns to its earlier state.

I know this all sounds complicated and theoretical, however, the concept of Social Time, once mastered, can and will prevent you from looking like a social tool… that is, unless you want to boogie down with Grandma Ethel and the groom’s 11 year-old cousin? ๐Ÿ˜‰

(Serious note: Have fun at your first social!)

Your graph rocks, Michel! I really appreciate the time, effort, and talent that went into creating that learning tool. I am left wondering if there is any way of manipulating the graph to reflect the following criteria: a) we are all adults, over the age of 25, b) this is our first social, ergo, we have no idea what to expect when arriving at 8, 9, or 10pm!, and c) is it SO wrong to want to dance with Grandma Ethel and the groom’s 11-year-old cousin? (what if they taught us the Macarena at a family reunion last summer and we’ve been practicing our sweet moves for months?!)

Duly noted, Galina. I will also help to keep the team aware of their cheap drink intake!

  5. Michel says:

Well, all those factors taken into account, I believe the graph would look like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PDIBTS_xDQ

    Thank you, Vengaboys!

Is the social north side or south side ? If north, you’re gonna be forced to polka at least once. If south, the polka potential drops to about 50/50.

Also, bring extra breath mints. There will be garlic coil in your future.

    Great blog !
